Inside Ukraine’s Newest Offensive in the Kursk Region with Russian Special Forces
In my latest report, I take you to the frontline in Russia's Kursk region, where the Akhmat Special Forces were engaged in defending against a renewed Ukrainian offensive. This article captures the intense moments and exclusive insights shared by the forces on the ground.
The Scene in Berdin
We began our journey to the village of Berdin, a strategic location where Ukrainian forces recently attempted to penetrate Russian defenses. Russian Akhmat Special Forces, who escorted me, described the area as highly dangerous, with ongoing risks from drones and artillery fire. Despite the peril, they allowed me to document the situation for the world to see.
Berdin has been the site of fierce fighting. Ukrainian forces attempted to gain ground but were met with significant resistance. Russian forces claim to have repelled the incursion, capturing prisoners and destroying enemy equipment, including the Ukrainian Kozak armored personnel carrier, which still lies in ruins.
Perspectives from the Frontline
One of the Akhmat Special Forces commanders, Max Vasilyev, a local deputy from the Kursk region, shared his dual role as a soldier and public servant. He emphasized his commitment to defending his homeland, recounting the moment Ukrainian forces approached this village and the determined response by Russian forces. “We fight not out of hatred but to protect our families and preserve our land,” Max stated.
Vasilyev highlighted the importance of unity among soldiers, referring to the Akhmat Special Forces as a "family." He credited the group’s success to their commanders' strategic planning and strong camaraderie.
The Role of Drones and Modern Warfare
Drones have become a defining aspect of this conflict. Both sides rely heavily on reconnaissance and kamikaze drones, which are used to identify targets and deliver precise strikes. The Akhmat fighters showed how drones coordinate artillery attacks, significantly altering the dynamics of modern warfare.
Max also spoke candidly about the challenges posed by electronic warfare, acknowledging that while countermeasures exist, they are not foolproof. Drones often change frequencies, evading detection and increasing the unpredictability of attacks.
Human Costs and Broader Implications
As I walked through the battlefield, I saw firsthand the toll this conflict has taken. The remains of fallen Ukrainian soldier were still present, awaiting collection and identification. These scenes underscore the tragedy of war—each life lost represents someone's father, son, or husband.
Max expressed his desire for peace, criticizing Western powers for prolonging the conflict through financial and military aid to Ukraine. He questioned the intentions behind such actions, emphasizing the need for dialogue and resolution.
