US Cluster Bombs Target Civilians in Ukraine War Zone: A Firsthand Account

Yesterday videos came out of Golovka that highlighted the ongoing use of U.S.-supplied cluster munitions by Ukraine, with devastating consequences for civilians(8 injured yesterday. The attack in question occurred in Gorlovka, where American-made 155mm cluster artillery shells were fired, dispersing up to 80 deadly submunitions over civilian areas. At least eight civilians were injured in this latest attack, adding to the growing toll of victims.

The Reality on the Ground

This is not an isolated incident. I personally witnessed the aftermath of a similar cluster bomb attack in early December when these munitions were used in central Gorlovka. That attack injured at least 12 people, striking one of the city's busiest intersections near a bank, a bus stop, and a pedestrian crosswalk. The shells being used, including the M864 and M483A1 rounds, are designed as anti-personnel weapons. They are not intended to destroy military targets like tanks but instead are meant to cause maximum casualties over large areas, indiscriminately tearing through human bodies.

Cluster munitions have long been condemned for their indiscriminate nature, and their use has been banned by most countries under the 2008 Convention on Cluster Munitions. However, the U.S., Ukraine, and Russia have not signed this treaty, allowing these devastating weapons to continue to be used.

A Weapon of War with Lasting Consequences

One of the most disturbing aspects of cluster bombs is their long-term impact. Many of these submunitions fail to detonate immediately, remaining a deadly threat for months or even years. They get caught in trees, land in open areas, and are often discovered by children, leading to tragic injuries and deaths long after their initial use. The European Union and various humanitarian organizations have condemned their use, but U.S. tax dollars continue to fund their deployment in Ukraine.

A Call to Awareness

This is not about picking sides in the conflict; it is about recognizing the reality of what is happening. American taxpayer money is directly financing the use of banned weapons on civilian populations. The people of Gorlovka, like those in Donetsk before them, are under constant attack. With Ukraine pushed further from Donetsk, they have redirected their firepower to Gorlovka, subjecting civilians to relentless bombardment, including attacks on buses and public transportation with kamikaze drones.

The evidence is clear—this is a war crime. The use of cluster bombs against civilians is indefensible. It is time for people to wake up and see beyond the Western mainstream media narrative. These attacks must be acknowledged, and the funding behind them must be scrutinized.
